For the Zuni, Hopi and Navajo people, the San Francisco Peaks have always been sacred. The earliest white men to visit these mountains were Spanish friars, who named them in honor of St. Francis of Assisi in the 1630's. Humphries Peak, at 12,633 feet, is the highest point in Arizona.
