After seven failed,bloody, Union assults on Confederates entrenched on Marye's Heights in Fredericksburg, Richard Rowland Kirkland, a Confederate soldier from South Carolina risked his own life to bring water to his fallen foes. Soldiers from both sides called him the "Angel of Marye's Heights". Richard Kirkland was killed at Chickamauga nine months later.
